Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
