Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior representative stated the incident left him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
